Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a type of fungus. It mainly grows on the outside of birch trees in very cold climates. Chaga mushrooms grow wild in places like Siberia, northern Canada, Alaska, and some northern areas of the continental United States. Chaga is a primary adaptogen, cancer fighter, immune system modulator, anti-tumor agent, gastrointestinal tonifier, longevity tonic and genoprotective agent (DNA-shielding).
Chaga’s purifying, detoxifying and healing properties have been known in Russia for centuries. People in Siberia still brew and drink chaga instead of black tea or coffee. Russian scientists have noticed that in areas where people regularly drink chaga tea, the rate of cancerous diseases among local folk have been much lower than in other regions and illnesses connected with stomach are almost unknown there. Many people in Siberia who drink chaga daily, usually live very long and healthy lives, some even over 100 years. Chaga has one of the strongest antioxidant activity.Human cell studies show that Chaga extract reduces the growth of colon cancer and liver cancer. Human cell studies find that Chaga extract reduced only the growth of cancer cells, not all the growth of all cells. Chaga extract increases the production of immune cells IL-6 and lymphocyte B. This can help increase the immune system’s ability to fight pathogens. Chaga mushroom also has anti-viral activities and can help prevent viral infections. Chaga extract decreases HIV replication. It also prevents the Herpes virus and Epstein-Barr virus from infecting new cells and from replicating in animal studies. Chaga also decreased infection from the hepatitis C virus in other animal studies. Chaga is able to reduce an over activated immune response, which can limit harmful inflammation. Both hot water and ethanol extracts of Chaga are able to kill bacterial and fungal cells in cell culture. Chaga extract also stopped quorum sensing, which is a method that bacteria cells use to activate gene expression. Anti-quorum sensing can help fight against bacterial infection.
